CROSS-CULTURAL TEACHING ABROAD IN SOUTH AFRICA

Michigan State University College of Education Summer Study Abroad

Custom-designed for education majors before or after their internship year, this program in Cape Town offers a valuable opportunity to teach in a diverse and changing educational system that will broaden the experience and outlook of those preparing for a career in education.

Home: Welcome

UNIQUE CO-TEACHING OPPORTUNITY

Each MSU student will be paired with a collaborating South African teacher in the same academic field and grade level as the student.

After a period of classroom observation, you will develop lessons and co-teach with the cooperating teacher,

and finally teach classes independently under the supervision of the cooperating teacher.

You will be able to participate in a wide variety of school and community activities during the placement at a school.

You will live with a South African teacher’s family to obtain a first-hand understanding of the communities in which they live and teach.

Regular meetings with the instructors will serve to interpret and expand on the practical knowledge learned in the classroom,

and relate it to previous knowledge of the U.S. educational system.

PROGRAM LEADER BIO

Dr. Corvell Cranfield is a Fulbright scholar from South Africa who completed his PhD at MSU in mathematics education. He was at MSU for 6 years and has been fortunate to lead this Cross-cultural Teaching Abroad: South Africa program for the past several years.
Before attending MSU in 2006, Corvell was the deputy principal at a high school in Cape Town and taught mathematics at all levels, and he also worked at the University of Cape Town in their Schools Development Unit for 8 years. As the Deputy Director and Project Manager for Research and Development in this Unit, Corvell gained valuable experiences in leadership, administration, management, research and development, project design and implementation, teaching in the Advanced Certificate in Education, and materials development.
Corvell's research interest and dissertation is investigating achievement patterns and mathematical identities that develop as a result of a history of underachievement of students from ‘disadvantaged’ communities in South Africa.
